Hi all...and Beth, In the Gavotte in D Major, Suzuki Book 3, in the first full measure, there is an f# 8th note with a line through it...I've listened to Beth's video on this Gavotte and am curious as to any of you who have a 'live' teacher :) also. Beth (and every youtube video I've watched) plays that note like you would a grace note...quickly...however my 'live' teacher tells me that the line through the note means that you hold it longer than a grace note...has anyone else heard this interpretation? I intend to play it her way in my lesson but Beth's way at home as I think it sounds better. Thanks for any feedback. 12 Responses Posted: April 22, 2017 Last Comment: April 29, 2017 |

Ha ha. I was just assigned this again by my current teacher. She teaches the quick 16th note version. The new edition of Suzuki has the 16th written in below the staff. |

My first teacher said to play it longer as if it were and eighth note and it would subtract time from the attached half note. |

I look forward to hearing Beth's response too, I am just guessing on how to play it from playing it back awhile ago when all I did was memorize the songs. |

I'm looking forward to this. I'm working on this piece with my local teacher and he has taught me to play it as a really fast grace note. Can't wait to see Beth's video response!!! Her personalized responses are always such a treat. |

Gavotte in D Major Thank you Beth, I'll look forward to your video...will it be titled the same as the teaching video's for this Gavotte? I'll play it my local teacher's way because i respect her teaching but it sure doesn't sound like the way you play it. |

Cheryl, the answer to your question is actually a little involved. I'll make a video response soon. |

Cheryl, I am not in Suzuki 3 yet, but I know that grace notes are interpreted in different ways. Sometimes they are just very short, sometimes they "share" the "time allotment" equally with note they precede. I don't know when it is which - I am not sure whether there even are fast and safe rules, but what Barb played sounds right in my ears. So this would be a "long" grace note. |

This discussion includes members-only video content sorry for all the messages, but hope I did not confuse the issue, but someone with more experience will probably answer this better Here is how I would play it |
